I first fell in love with mezcal while at the Oaxaca Film Festival, in Oaxaca, Mexico, where mezcal was distributed at every event.

The bottle of mezcal that inspired The Mezcal Monologues was purchased this past April in Pojoaque, New Mexico, at a liquor store called Kokomon.  Pojoaque is a Native American town north of Santa Fe, and Kokomon is one of the few U.S. based distributors that sells quality Mezcal.  Here, I bought a bottle of Ron Cooper's Del Maguey label, "The Wild Mountain Maguey," recommended by a friend.  This was just after If I Had A Piano (I'd Play You The Blues), my Portuguese language art house film, had played as an Official Selection of the Taos Shortz Film Fest in Taos, NM.  In Taos, I was inspired by the quality selection of international films, and yes, the mezcal.

It's a miracle I found Pojoaque in time to catch my plane back to Pennsylvania, and I arrived home in hand with a very special bottle of mezcal.  For about a week, I pondered over what to do with this bottle.  Do I gift it to  a friend?  Save it for a special occasion?  Throw a party?  At the same time, the early seeds of Para Todo Mal...Para Todo Bien:  The Mezcal Trilogy were brewing.  I finally decided, I would use it to write monologues.  I let my subconscious explore the themes which inspired the film trilogy, and found myself frequently returning to themes of mobility (i.e. the ability or inability to travel freely from place to place, country to country); promoting tolerance and acceptance of every human being (contrasted with the intolerant speeches I kept hearing in the news); and of course, my go to themes of intimacy, vulnerability, love, and sex.

By the end of the process, I had written about twenty-five monologues (in addition to some scribblings of pure jibberish) and ultimately narrowed it down to fourteen.  I rearranged the order (slightly) and made some edits so that the fourteen monologues together would flow in a subtle story arc, while separately maintaining their individuality as stand alone pieces.

Most important to this process is bringing the actors into it.  It is by casting each actor in a  specific monologue that the individual monologues come to life in a personality of its own.  Most of the actors cast are from The Lehigh Valley, in Pennsylvania, with a few special guests direct from NYC.

Me enamoré de mezcal, primero, en el Oaxaca Film Festival en Oaxaca, Mexico, donde se distribuía mezcal en todos los eventos.

 

La botella de mezcal que inspiró Los Monólogos del Mezcal fue comprado en abril pasado en Pojoaque, NM en una tienda de licor que se llama Kokomon. Pojoaque es un pueblo de los indios americanos nativos en el norte de Santa Fe. Kokomon es una de las pocas tiendas que vende mezcal con calidad en los Estados Unidos.  Aquí, yo compré una botella de Ron Cooper’s Del Maguey, “The Wild Mountain Maguey,” recomendado por un amigo. 

 

Esto fue después de If I Had A Piano (I’d Play You The Blues), un cortometraje del idioma portugués di mía, había sido proyectado como una selección oficial del Taos Shortz Film Festival en Taos, NM. En Taos, estaba inspirada en las películas internacionales de calidad , y sí, mezcal también. Es un milagro que he encontrado Pojoaque a tiempo de mi vuelo de regreso a Pennsylvania. Llegué a casa con una botella de mezcal muy especial. Durante una semana, pensé en qué hacer con esta botella. ¿Doy a un amigo? ¿Lo guardo para una ocasión especial? ¿Quizás para un guateque?  

Al misma tiempo, estaba empezando a desarrollar la Trilogía de Mezcal.  Finalmente, yo decidí que iba a utilizar el mezcal para escribir los monólogos. Permití a mi subconsciente explorar los temas que inspiraron la trilogía. Mientras escribía, con la urgencia de regresar a los temas de movilidad; favorable a la tolerancia y a la aceptación de cada persona; y desde luego, mis temas favoritos de intimidad, vulnerabilidad, amor, y sexo. 

 

Al final, he escrito veinticinco monólogos, y por último, los he reducido a catorce. He editado el último y he modificado el orden un poco para crear un arco narrativo, y al mismo mantener su individualidad. 

 

Lo más importante para este proceso son los actores. Cada actor aporta su propia personalidad en los monólogos. La mayoría de los actores son del Lehigh Valley, PA, y unos cuantos de NYC.
